STORY

Since 1983, the Women's History Coalition of Miami Dade County has been dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of women in our community. Our organization is a non-profit 501(c)3 dedicated to recording, promoting, and publishing the stories and experiences of women in Miami Dade County.

Our mission is to promote, empower, and advocate for programs and events that celebrate the contributions and achievements of women throughout history. We are passionate about ensuring that the stories of our community's women are not forgotten and that their legacy lives on.

WHC is dedicated to promoting the study and celebration of the history of women in Miami-Dade County and beyond. Our events, such as Herstory, Julia Tuttle Women's History Month Kick Off and The Women of Impact Awards, focus on celebrating, educating and inspiring individuals about the vital role women have played in building our nation.

Books

Herstory Books

HerStory Books provides an invaluable service to the community, researching and recognizing the achievements of women in Miami-Dade County from 1513 to present. Their research has resulted in the publication of three volumes of history, making them the most comprehensive source of information on the contributions of women in the region. HerStory Books is a vital resource for anyone interested in learning more about the history of women in the area.

Julia Tuttle Celebration

The Annual Julia Tuttle Commemorative Service is a special event held by the Women's History Coalition (WHC) on March 1st of each year to kick off Women's History Month. The service takes place at the Miami City Cemetery and honors the legacy of Julia Tuttle, the "Mother of Miami" who was instrumental in the city's founding. Attendees gather to pay tribute to Julia Tuttle and celebrate the vibrant history of the city.

Women of Impact Awards

The Women of Impact Awards recognize and honor outstanding women who have made extraordinary contributions to the community in the areas of civic engagement, volunteerism, business leadership, and philanthropy. Since 1989, this prestigious award has been given to dynamic women in Miami-Dade County who have exemplified a commitment to making a change and have had a positive impact on the lives of others. It is an honor to recognize these inspiring women and celebrate their contributions to our community.

Membership

Membership is open to any individuals interested in promoting and supporting women’s history efforts in Miami-Dade County. 

The following volunteer opportunities are available for any member:

  • Women of Impact Committee to select and plan the annual Women of Impact event

  • Julia Tuttle Memorial Committee to plan and execute the event every March 1st

  • Speakers Bureau – serve as a speaker for classroom presentation or group speeches during Women’s History Month

  • Oral Histories – serve on the committee to help document the achievements of Women of Impact
